Quick and Dirty Clutch Break-In Comparison

I highly recommend you go to my other post about clutch break-in. It goes into more detail than I do here about proper break-in procedures.

When I say how long a clutch will last below it is really hard to pin down a good number. This depends so much on the person. Someone can destroy a clutch in less than 100 miles if they ride the pedal. Everyone has a different level of ability with a manual transmission and some of us do things that do not help the longevity of clutches. So the numbers here are my best guess based on someone that knows how to drive a manual car. I am also basing it on what I think a person is going to do with that particular clutch. Ceramic is going to be abused more in general, for instance.

With that said most clutches will last to 100k miles if driven correctly. Especially organics and kevlar but you can also get a lot of life out of other types as well. Just not if you are going to be abusing or racing them.

CeramicYesGive it a couple hard slips to bed it in and it’s good to go. You may want to do one heat cycle between the slips. Be sure to check with your specific manufacturer but this is the cast for most ceramics I have seen.40k or less is likely. Depends on the application and the abuse it will be subjected to. Racing

OrganicYesYou need 500 city miles minimum and if you do only highway miles then expect 1000-2000 miles for the full break-in. If you are familiar with manual transmissions you will be able to tell when the clutch is finally starting to bed in. It will get smoother to operate over time. If you have an organic clutch to break-in then read my post linked above, it will help you.You can get 100k+ out of an organic clutch if you treat it right and do a lot of highway driving. Most people will get less, closer to 60-80k I would say.Daily driving

HD OrganicYesThese are tougher than standard organic clutches. They can take more abuse. This is likely a stage 1 clutch or something very similar to that. Treat it just like you would a standard organic clutch during break-in and you can’t go wrong.Since this is a performance variant I would expect less life just based on how it will be driven. You should be able to get 40-60k out of them no problem if you know how to drive stick. Some racing

KevlarYesThis will need around 1000 miles city break-in. About double what your standard organic clutch needs. You need to be extra careful not to slip this too much because it can cause lasting damage if you heat it up too far. This can be a very annoying clutch, I would heavily recommend against using this in a daily driving situation. These last quite a long time. Roughly 2-3x longer than a standard organic clutch if driven correctly. You can easily destroy one in stop and go traffic so it is not recommended for a daily driver.Racing
